Process your own birds
The coop has processing equipment available to rent. Rental equipment is a good choice if you are raising birds for your personal consumption. The equipment is best suited for processing chickens and turkeys. Waterfowl can be processed using the equipment but in many cases it is simpler to skin waterfowl rather than scalding and plucking due to their plentiful feathers and down.
You must be a member to rent processing equipment
We have rental equipment in two locations:
1) Polson: This unit consists of a cargo trailer to haul the equipment which includes: a propane scalder (user supplies propane), electric plucker, stainless steel table, killing cones (2), chill tank, and bird cages (2). All equipment must be plugged in to GFI outlet.
Users need a 1 7/8" ball to haul the trailer.
Directions for scalder- Read instructions on thermostat for pilot light system to heat water. Scalder must be plugged in for pilot light to work. We recommend that you fill the scalder with HOT water so the heat up time is less.
2) Livingston: This unit consists of a cargo trailer to haul the equipment which includes: a propane scalder (user supplies propane), electric plucker, evisceration table, and a couple bird cages. The plucker will process 2-3 chickens at a time, or 1 turkey. All equipment must be plugged in to a GFI outlet.
The rental costs $53 and is for three days of use
The following calendar shows all dates for which rental equipment is already reserved. The equipment is available all days that are blank. To reserve equipment, first look on the calendar to make sure it is available for the dates you want. If it is available, you can reserve the equipment at the bottom of this page. During checkout, you will be prompted to specify which date you want to pick up the equipment.
Equipment should be returned to the Coop in a condition in compliance with the cleaning checklist. A fee of $50 will be charged to the renter if the equipment is returned in a condition requiring cleaning or maintenance that is not reported. We understand that mechanical failures can happen and we need to fix these problems as soon as they occur. Please report any problems you have with the equipment both when you receive it and when you return it.
